Ian Andersen escapes Iran

Ian Andersen escapes Iran war

Ian Andersen escapes Iran as war with Israel erupts, leaving the travel vlogger caught amid escalating violence. His bike journey across Iran turned into a desperate effort to escape a warzone.

From Scenic Rides to Survival Mode

Andersen had entered Iran on June 2, capturing food, landscapes, and warm hospitality across the country. His TikToks featured local dishes like kaleh pacheh, kind strangers practicing ta’arof, and reflections on sanctions and Iran’s isolation.

But just over three weeks into his trip, Israeli airstrikes hit Iranian targets, and everything changed.

“I can no longer protect you,” Andersen’s guide, Reza, told him. “If you’re stopped by police, I should just wave goodbye.”

U.S. Urges Americans to Leave Iran

As the State Department issued urgent evacuation advisories, many Americans struggled to find a way out. Airspace was closing, and neighboring borders were uncertain.

Andersen originally planned to continue his journey into Afghanistan, but the escalating attacks made travel too dangerous. Instead, he and Reza rerouted toward the Azerbaijan border.

“It ended up being a good call,” said Andersen, “There was just more and more attacks.”

 Escaping Through Azerbaijan

Despite Iran’s partial internet blackout, Andersen received a lifeline: an email from the U.S. State Department with exit guidance. Reza drove him to the Azerbaijani border, risking his own safety to get Andersen out.

“I probably wouldn’t be here talking if it weren’t for Reza,” Andersen said.

He posted a video thanking Reza and said he was still thinking of those unable to flee.

 Not Everyone Can Leave

UK-based TikTok couple Nadia Akhtar and Irfan Aziz, known as @fieldofvisions, were also in Iran with their young son when the strikes began. They witnessed Israeli drones intercepted above their balcony and bombings near Tabriz.

With help from their guide, Ali, they drove through the night to reach Turkey’s border.

“Ali left his family behind to help us escape,” Aziz said. “Millions of people like him have no choice but to stay.”

🇮🇷 A Nation Cut Off

For Andersen and others, the war brought a jarring contrast to the beauty and kindness they experienced during peacetime in Iran. His content shifted from joy to fear — and then, to gratitude for survival.

“I’m out, and truly grateful for all your prayers,” Andersen said. “To Reza — there’s no one I’d rather have had by my side.”
