A quiet literary revolution is taking place—only it’s not so quiet anymore.
Gen Z book clubs are redefining social life, turning quiet reading circles into lively gatherings with wine, playlists, and themed outfits. These modern clubs aren’t just about reading—they’re about community, creativity, and connection.
A Post-Pandemic Reading Revival
The pandemic gave many people time to rekindle their love of reading. That rediscovery, paired with a growing desire for off-screen interaction, helped spark a book club renaissance. According to Eventbrite, book club listings grew by 31% in 2024, and silent book clubs more than doubled.
Beyond the Books
What sets these modern gatherings apart is the mix of book talk with social activities. From charm bracelet making to guided city runs based on a book’s setting, clubs are more engaging than ever. “It’s definitely evolved,” said Ijanae Dawkins, 26, of Philly’s Book and Sip. “Students arrive with new best friends and depart with them.”
Your Local Book Club in Austin collaborates with neighborhood merchants and even provides pet photos. With routes based on the books themselves, Chicago’s Read and Run combines reading with physical activity.
The #BookTok Effect, Threads, and TikTok Online platforms such as Threads’ #Bookthreads and TikTok’s #BookTok drive this upsurge. Viral videos, Goodreads, and apps like The StoryGraph make book lovers feel part of something bigger—and in-person events are the natural next step.
Mishayla Twyman, founder of Your Local Book Club, started with friends and now runs a community of 1,500+ readers. Meanwhile, NYC’s cheekily named Book Club for Book Hoes built a 500+ person waitlist after viral TikToks.
More Than Stories
These clubs offer more than just discussion. They’re places to find friendship, explore identity, and build community. Events now feature Booksgivings, candle-making sessions, and even winter retreats.
“Books help us navigate the world,” said Book Club for Book Hoes founder Zoë Mahler. “And book clubs help us navigate life.”
